Anders Larson – jazz trombone player

I am a Swedish jazz trombone player based in Copenhagen, Denmark since 1996. I work as a freelance musician, educator, composer, arranger, and conductor.

Founder of digitaltrombone.com.

Wife and two kids, and a reasonably nice guy.

EDUCATION

Rythmic Music Conservatory, Copenhagen, 1996-2002
Studied with a.o. Conrad Herwig, Gary Valente, Jigs Wigham and Nils Landgren

TROMBONES

Anders Larson plays a Shires small bore trombone, a Bach 36, and a large-bore Yamaha YSL-682. Also the proud owner of a collection of various trombone mutes, all with more or less disintegrating cork fittings.

Mouthpieces

Don’t get me started…but my current favorite when playing jazz trombone is the amazing small-bore Laskey 50C. That is a keeper! I lent it from a colleague five minutes before the first gig on a tour with the Danish Radio Big Band a few years ago. Buzzed it for a few minutes, put it on my horn when I got on stage…and have been using it ever since!

When playing large-bore trombones, I usually play either Bach or Dennis Wick mouthpieces.

ON STAGE

My stage work is mainly as a jazz trombone player in small groups and big bands.
Leader of Elektrojazz – a groovy jazz band with the sound of the seventies. And lots of trombone.
Leader of Anders Larson Quartet, collaborating with a.o. with Paizo String Quartet, Søs Fenger, Anders Bergcrantz, and Gerard Precenser.
Performed with numerous big bands – Danish Radio Big Band (DK), Matthew Herbert Big Band (UK), Kathrine Windfeld Big Band (DK), Tivoli Big Band (DK), Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band (DK), Monday Night Big Band (SE), Aarhus Jazz Orchestra (DK), The Orchestra (DK), Norrbotten Big Band (SE), Disneyland Paris Big Band, and many others.

Performed in numerous musicals and TV shows. Backing up artists like Kim Wilde, Katie Melua, Westlife, Marcos Valle, Mick Hucknall, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Outlandish, Thomas Helmig, Eran DD, Sanne Salomonsen, and Kim Larsen in different band setups.

COMPOSING/ARRANGING/CONDUCTING

As a composer and big band arranger, I have worked with a.o. the Danish Radio Big Band, Monday Night Big Band, and Tivoli Big Band with soloists such as Mike Stern, Gerard Precenser, James Morrison, and Caroline Henderson.

I also work extensively as a big band conductor, waving my hands in front of everything from humble beginner orchestras to top-notch pros.

Many years of teaching experience covering every step from music school beginners to conservatory students and professional trombone players.

It’s not all about music. I am the co-founder of vilter.dk, personal customized bedtime stories for kids.

Performances by jazz trombone player Anders Larson

Elektrojazz - Cars

DR Big Band with Lisa Nilsson (Live)

Elektrojazz New York Tribute

A preview of the music from my album Cars with my band Elektrojazz, celebrating classic cars from the seventies.

God Give me Strength with Lisa Nilsson. Trombone solo at 5:35. This is why you should practice improvising in the key of Gb major – you never know when you have to do just that on stage on live TV standing next to one of your childhood heroes…!

The story behind the album and preview of the music. A collaboration between Elektrojazz and New York artists.

East Village Blues - Elektrojazz

Shine (feat. Michael Stephenson) - Elektrojazz

Weldon (Timo Lassy & MNBB)

A tribute to a New York neighborhood. Struggling to remember which… From the album New York Tribute.

Composed together with the amazing New York-based singer and sax player Michael Stephenson. From the album New York Tribute.

Jazz trombone solo performed by Anders Larson. Old footage – shaky and blurred and with an almost slim trombone player behind my (now sold) King 2B Silversonic.

Arrangements & music by Anders Larson

Chromazone - Mike Stern & DR Big Band

Maria (West Side Story)

Impressions Of A West Side Story

An arrangement I wrote for DR Big Band feat. Mike Stern. No real fusion jazz without tuba and piccolo flute – can you spot them?

A project with the Danish Radio Big Band and Gerard Precenser interpreting the music from West Side Story. This arrangement is quite flute-heavy. “Smurf-jazz!” (Quote from the recording session)

A composition that heavily quotes West Side Story. From the album Impressions Of A West Side Story with the Danish Radio Big Band.

One Less

Take Five

Unborn - Anders Larson Quartet & Strings

One of my big band compositions featuring myself on trombone.

A arrangement of Take Five for big band and male vocal. Here performed by singer Niklas Fredin and Monday Night Big Band. trombone solo by yours truly.

From my first solo album, a tribute to my at that time still unborn son. He is very much born by now, I am soon to be out-grown by him!
